About me

Simon Chapman is an Australian cinematographer based in Vancouver, Canada.

Graduating from the Australian national film school (AFTRS) in 2002, Chapman has been pursuing a life behind the lens since the age of 15. 

Currently, Simon is shooting season 2 of ‘The Recruit’ for Netflix and eOne and in 2022 he completed work on another espionage political thriller ‘The Night Agent’ with director Adam Arkin also for Netflix. This was the #1 most watched show on Netflix for 2023.

2023 was a busy year shooting some additional scenes for the Disney+ series ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ as well as shooting the pilot episode of “High Potential” for ABC alongside EP Drew Goddard and director Alethea Jones. This was successufully ordered to series and will be shot in LA. The same year saw him shoot the pilot for “Cruel Intentions” with long time collaborator Adam Arkin for Amazon Freevee.

In 2008 Simon shot his debut feature film ‘The Loved Ones’ which went on to win the top prize ‘Midnight Madness’ award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as well as a gold ACS award.

Chapman photographed the feature film ‘Cut Snake’ for director Tony Ayers in 2013 closely followed by the ‘The Devils Candy’ for director Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) in 2014. Simon then shot feature film ‘Killing Ground’ which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival to much critical acclaim.

Chapman shot a 6 part limited series for the ABC called ‘Glitch’ with director Emma Freeman, winning an ACS award for his work as well as numerous AACTA awards. The following year saw Simon shoot ABC miniseries ‘Friday on my Mind’ for acclaimed director Matt Saville & followed that with 10 part procedural drama ‘Harrow’ for the ABC.

In 2018 Simon worked in the UK on the iconic long running sci-fi series ‘Doctor Who’ for the BBC followed by the period drama ‘Gentleman Jack’ for HBO. This was another successful collaboration with director Jennifer Perrot and exec producer Sally Wainwright.

It was a busy year for Chapman in 2019 shooting season 1 of ‘Upload’ for Amazon with producer Greg Daniels, followed by ‘Sacred Lies’ starring Juliette Lewis and then finishing the year with the first series of ‘Space Force’ with Steve Carell and John Malkovich.

Other credits include ‘Lost in Space’ season 3 for Netflix working with British director Julian Holmes and the final season of ‘Space Force’ with director Ken Kwapis.
